Imam · Masjid Al-Ihsan & Islamic Institute of Urban Affairs
A dedicated servant of Allah and the Bronzeville community, Imam Abdullah Madyun has guided Masjid Al-Ihsan with wisdom, compassion, and commitment to Islamic excellence and community service.
Biography
Imam Abdullah Madyun is the spiritual leader of Masjid Al-Ihsan and the Islamic Institute of Urban Affairs, located at 321 E Pershing Road in Bronzeville, Chicago. For decades, he has served as a pillar of the Muslim community on Chicago's South Side, providing spiritual guidance, community development, and Islamic education.
“The masjid is not just a place of prayer — it is the anchor of the community. Every door we open, every program we run, every person we serve is an act of Amanah. We are caretakers of this community, fisabilillah.”
Under Imam Madyun's leadership, Masjid Al-Ihsan has grown into a comprehensive community institution. The Islamic Institute of Urban Affairs operates alongside the masjid to provide social services, educational programs, and community outreach to the Bronzeville neighborhood and the broader South Side.
Community Leadership
Imam Madyun's approach to Islamic leadership is rooted in the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ — combining deep scholarship with practical service to the community. He delivers the weekly Jumu'ah khutbah, leads the nightly Isha lecture series, and provides guidance on matters of Islamic jurisprudence, family, and community affairs.
His work in Bronzeville reflects the Haal Project's framework of Caretaking — recognizing that the Names of Allah are made visible through the work of those who serve creation. Al-Hadi — The Guide — is expressed through every lesson taught, every family counseled, every returning citizen welcomed back into the community.
Islamic Institute of Urban Affairs
The Islamic Institute of Urban Affairs, operating under Imam Madyun's guidance, serves as the community development arm of Masjid Al-Ihsan. It bridges the masjid's spiritual mission to the material needs of the Bronzeville community — connecting residents to social services, educational resources, and economic empowerment programs. Fisabilillah.
